Preparing for Your Performance
Nov 15th, 2009 | By Jade | Category: Dance Tips, How ToMany dancers freak out when they hear the word stage. They may get a sudden case of stage fright if they have never been on one or they have a nervous break down because belly dance is so new to them. If you’ve never belly danced before and you are coming up on your first performance, here are some tips to make your performance go smoother.
- Check your costume the night before. (fix any holes, broken threads or missing beads or buttons while you have time).
- Pack your performance bag the night before also. (this will ensure that you have everything in case you run late).
- Test your makeup look one week in advance so you have time to change it in case it doesn’t work out.
- If you have a call time, be there 20 minutes early. (if you are performing with a lot of dancers, be even earlier so you can find mirror space with good lighting in the dressing room). The last thing you want to do is be late to your own performance. Arriving early also allows for “unwinding time.” This is the time when you stretch and warm up. Some dancers meditate during this time.
When packing your bag the night before, make a list. It will be easier to remember what you packed and what you need. Here are some suggestions:
- Costume (be sure to list all the pieces)
- Make up (even if you did it at home, bring it just in case)
- Make up remover
- Cotton balls
- Lots of safety pins (large ones are best)
- Needle and thread (costumes have a tendency to fall apart when you need them)
- Cover up (so you don’t get cold and your costumes can be a surprise)
- Lotion (looks better in stage light if your skin is polished, rather than dry and brittle)
- Towel (extra sweat)
- Bobby Pins
- Hair products and accessories (including a curling iron or straightener).
Be sure to pack your list when you finish packing your bag. Don’t forget to shave. The last thing you want is to raise your arm and a forest is growing.
If you mess up, just keep going. Don’t make a face if you do and remember the audience can read lips so don’t let obsenities cross them. Don’t forget
to smile.

Another good job baby.
