| Background |
I’ve been playing percussion for 15 years or so, some strings for 10. I was studying art history at a UC and became interested in comparative theology (sic) and wondered why music was left out of the research. LIBANA is a great inspiration. They seem to be concerned with the pure beauty of a piece.I have a fondness for rhythm and its structuring and prefer various Mediterranean styles extending into West Africa and Cuba. Nourhan Sharif and Angelika Nemeth were incredible to work with but now I work with Tina Enheduanna almost exclusively and she is great too. |

| I end up teaching wherever I go. Rarely do I teach anything other than percussion. My style focuses on the musicality of playing as a feeling more than fulfilling other people’s expectations of correctness. I feel it is more important to be making the actual feeling of music than being stuck in any scientific stigma as music is an expression of self. I also incorporate melody instruments in my classes, or singing, in order to show the function of percussion more clearly. I also bring into play a vast peripheral research to make more sense of the collective whole. For instance while in Egypt looking for OUDs I looked into the economic impact on musicians being able to perform with other musicians they have never met before. |
